Paris Neighbourhoods hotels guide

The Marais

Paris’ hip Marais neighborhood is the epitome of cool, a favorite spot for fashionistas and foodies, the young and the restless, who come to shop in quirky boutiques and gawk at contemporary art in the stunning galleries located here. Sunday brunch is a major pastime and when the sun sets, the streets come alive as the after-work crowd descends for drinks and dinner.

This is where all of the local action is found, and it’s well worth pursuing to see how chic Parisians live. It’s a diverse, vibrant district, home to Paris’ Jewish quarter as well as a stunning 17th century market called Marché des Enfants Rouges, a mix of a farmer’s market and a food court offering a treasure trove of cuisines. If the crowds get you down, head for historic Place des Vosges for a picnic on the grass or a tranquil stroll under the vaulted arches.

Saint Germain

A taste of quintessential Paris which is why the area’s art galleries, shops, restaurants and jazz clubs are so popular with locals and tourists alike. The legendary café culture is still found here, although not only artists, writers and intellectuals frequent them, but the neighbourhood is also decidedly upper crust, home to famous designer stores and restaurants.

Here, masters in patisserie, chocolate, floral art and fabulous food vie for attention – and for good reason. A hidden gem is the covered market, the Marche Couvert Saint German, where you can pick up the best of the best when it comes to food and produce.

The Latin Quarter

Yes, this is where the students live, but that doesn’t mean it’s just inexpensive bars and eateries. On the contrary. The neighborhood is full of Parisian charm, cobbled streets to explore and some of the best food you’ll eat in the city. A great spot to hang out is Place Monge, home to an open-air market 3 times a week offering the best produce the city has to offer, while nearby is Rue Mouffetard with its specialty stores, cafes and restaurants.

Closer to Notre Dame you’ll come across stores specializing in cheese or baguettes – make sure to indulge. There’s also plenty of history in this old part of Paris, including Roman ruins, a Medieval museum… and that’s just a start!

The 7th

For first time visitors to Paris, the 7th is a perfect base for exploration. This arrondissement has everything you think about when you think of the City of Lights – the Eiffel Tower, the Seine, notable museums, beautiful architecture, charming markets, high-end shopping, and world class restaurants. Situate yourself between the Champs des Mars and Invalides and you’ll be ideally positioned to enjoy some of the city’s most notable landmarks and neighborhood highlights.

One in particular is the Rue Cler, a lively market street with numerous vendors selling cheese, fresh produce, wine, baguettes, and anything else you might need to eat a la Francaise. If the weather is nice, head to the banks of the Seine with the locals for an after work apero or picnic. The Berges de Seines, the area roughly between the Musee D’Orsay and Pont D’alma hosts a variety of options. A great spot is the Pont Alexander III bridge, one of the most beautiful Beaux-Arts bridges in Paris, where you’ll also have a view of the Grand Palais just across the river. During the day, the area is family friendly with multiple play spots for children such as a climbing wall and converted shipping containers turned into mini-exhibitions. The 7th is a fun active area. If you’re clueless about where to stay then this is a great starting point.

South Pigalle

Live like the locals do in this lively neighborhood, once Paris’ red light district and now an up and coming area that is far from the touristy crowd. It’s ideally located close to Montmartre and Sacre Coeur and yet far enough away to enjoy the district’s own stylish cafes, eateries and bars.

It’s pretty in South Pigalle and you’ll find lots of hidden treasures, including numerous excellent food stores and fashion boutiques on Rue des Martyrs – and there’s always the lively farmers market nearby in Sacre Coeur on Friday nights where you can pick up superb deli fare from the Loire Valley. You also won’t have to look far to find a lively nightlife in bars and baroque salons.
