Khao Lak in a nutshell

Ideally situated around an hour’s drive from Phuket’s international airport, the Thai resort of Khao Lak is renowned for excellent diving and snorkelling opportunities, a variety of moderately priced beach resorts and a great atmosphere. This charming resort area is an ideal location for a less hectic and more authentic Thai resort experience. It’s an unspoilt paradise resort made up of a series of beaches, with a laidback vibe that is ideal for families and for those who enjoy deep sea diving and snorkelling in the untouched water world that is part of the national park islands of Ko Similan. 

Another favorite pastime here is hiking in the tropical jungle areas nearby. Khao Lak is situated in Phang Nga province on the coastline of southern Thailand on the Andaman Sea, close to stunning waterfalls and dense forests located in 2 nearby parks, the Khao Lak Lam Ru National Park and the Ko Surin National Park. 

Best time to visit: Visit in the dry season, November to April. Peak season is December to the end of February when the weather is idyllic.

Shopping in Khao Lak: There are plenty of shops offering all sorts of beach items and souvenirs. Visit the local market in Bang Nian (open 10am to 11pm daily) for authentic items. It also offers great street food.

Food & Restaurants in Khao Lak: The Khuk Khak Fresh market is a great spot to pick up local produce as well as to enjoy the traditional atmosphere. Khao Lak Beach, La On and Bang Nian all offer numerous local eateries serving global and traditional food. You’ll find the seafood superb, so enjoy plenty of fresh crab, lobster, prawns and fish.

Nightlife: While the resort isn’t a party resort, there is still plenty to do after dark, in clubs, bars and cafes. 

Beaches: There are a number of beaches along the Khao Lak coastline, including secluded Bang Sak Beach and Pakarang Cape. The most famous beaches are Pak Weep and White Sands Beach, both picturesque and great for swimming. Further afield is secluded Memories Beach, North Bang Niang Beach, situated 3km north of Khao Lak, Nangthong Beach in the center of the resort area and Merlin Beach, to the south, which is a hidden gem.

Things to do in Khao Lak: 

  • Go hiking in the jungle to explore spectacular Khao Lak Lam Ru National Park or Khao Sok National Park.
  • Visit the village of Bann Khao Lak, one of the main towns, for an authentic taste of Thai island life.
  • Enjoy superlative snorkelling or diving just off the islands of Similan and Surin.
  • Go swimming under the iconic Lampi Waterfall.
  • Visit iconic James Bond Island in Ao Phang Nga National Park.
  • See the International Tsunami Museum to find out how Thailand resorts survived after the tragic Tsunami in 2004.
  • Visit the Turtle Nursery created by the Royal Thai Navy Third Fleet to see how baby turtles are looked after until they can fend for themselves.

Best way to get around: Rent a car to explore at leisure, especially if you’re travelling with family. Alternatively rent a motorbike or bicycle.
