ENTEBBE

Entebbe

If you fly to Uganda you will inevitably land in Entebbe, home to Entebbe International Airport and the gateway to nearby Kampala.

Entebbe in a nutshell

Located about 38km from Kampala, Entebbe is home to Uganda’s international airport. The city is also used as a base for UN vehicles and heavy equipment. You’ll find Entebbe a more relaxed city than Kampala with a tranquil atmosphere.

Most famous for the raid by Israeli commandos in 1976 when more than 100 hostages were hijacked on an Air France flight, Entebbe is well worth visiting. Home to the official residence of the country’s president, the State House, Entebbe is located on the northern shore of spectacular Lake Victoria, a lush oasis that offers a number of exciting attractions.

Visitors here can enjoy a mini safari at the city’s Wildlife Education Center to view elephants, lions and chimps. The magnificent Botanical Gardens is worth exploring, too, and the more adventurous can take time out to see a selection of crocodiles and snakes at the Reptile Village.

The city is also an ideal base from which to explore its surroundings that include the iconic Mabamba Swamps.

Best time to visit: Travel here in the dry season, July to September. Rainy season is March to June.
