Charleston in a nutshell

Southern charm awaits in magical Charleston, setting for the Gone with the Wind, which was brought to life by actors Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable in the 1939 movie that epitomised the gentility and romance of this destination. To this day, Charleston still boasts those elegant mansions, lush trees draped with moss, horse-drawn carriages and gas-lit cobbled streets.

You can step back in time to experience those halcyon days in mansions turned museums that tell the story of that genteel time as well as at famous Fort Sumter, where the Civil War between the states started decades ago.

But there’s a modern side to Charleston, too, and plenty of natural beauty, including beautiful beaches on Folly Beach, Sullivan’s Island and the Isle of Palm. And let’s not forget the many secret gardens hidden behind wrought iron gates, so lush and scenic they look as if they’re right out of that movie – or any movie for that matter.

Charleston is a port city and it has transformed itself to keep up with the times, evident in its numerous stunning cocktail bars, modern eateries and contemporary hotels. Here, the past is now called ‘retro’ not ‘old’, and cutting edge design and facilities beg to be discovered.

Throughout the plantations, cypress groves, bird sanctuaries, beaches and waterways is a wonderland. Take the time to explore. You won’t be disappointed.
